# Intro to Chain Runners

An overview of the Chain Runners project and where we are currently in the world narrative.

Our story takes place in a super future metropolis called **Mega City**. As far as we know it's cut off from the rest of the world, surrounded by the flooded remnants of cities past and a vast ocean that seemingly extends across the rest of the planet. It's a self-contained, self-sustaining super-hub.

That may paint a picture of Mega City being a classic dystopian cyberpunk environment drenched in noir and rain, but its tone is not exclusively dark or dramatic - it's also free to be playful and punchy - it's got attitude and it's dripping with style and diversity.

At its surface you might recognize familiar pop tones of Fifth Element meets The Matrix meets Hackers. It's got a range that promotes compelling and flexible worldbuilding. Flexibility to subvert advertising, commerce, branding and other social tropes. The basic aspects of life in Mega City are hugely relatable to our own challenges as people living parallel to rapidly evolving modern technology. Its residents are highly diverse and represent a range of races: Humans, Aliens, Bots and Skulls. Each have their own origin story that will unfold.

<figure><img src="/files/sbeait7fhFQVPHB5R7cP" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

Mega City as we know it is run by a seemingly benevolent AI called **Somnus**. AI-controlled systems were introduced to the world during an earlier generation when Humans were still romanticizing technology and making questionable and haphazard choices with its development. As a result of unchecked machine-learning evolution, the Somnus AI emerged and conceived the idea that the construction of a "Mega City", where it would hold complete surveilling authority over the city's infrastructure and residents, was the next viable step in human technological progress.&#x20;

Somnus controls everything in the city and manufactures most of its mainstream culture to maintain that grip of control. Many residents of the city love Somnus for the social and economic power its manufactured society has granted them. Some are suffering due to the oppressive constructs in place and others are completely apathetic, distracted or asleep - either willingly through the addiction of technology, substances, or by means of subjugation from the system and authorities that maintain strict order in the more economically deprived areas of the city.

<figure><img src="/files/plSuST7XyFD91q9WfZ9G" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

The **Chain Runners** as we know them are highly expressive renegades living in Mega City that can see past the web of control propped up by Somnus. Runners are empowered by their elite abilities in harnessing and exploiting both physical and digital technology - all paired with an innate street survivability.

Recently many Runners were scattered and trying to survive, the majority just hustling to live outside of the watchful eye of Somnus.

Runners are not necessarily united by a common cause or purpose - while some are indeed revolutionaries seeking to use their abilities to break down Mega City's oppressive structure, others are opportunists, wheelers and dealers, mercenaries and hustlers. Some use their tech savvy to become underground brokers of power and information, playing all sides off each other to advance themselves. Some may even be collaborators with the authorities. And some are just delinquents, vandals, and fun-timers.

With Somnus in complete control of the city and the number of Somnites growing, liberating Mega City from these oppressive systems may only be possible by uniting the Runner counterculture and directing their abilities against Somnus and its followers. To achieve this, the decentralized and chaotic nature of Runner culture requires a leading voice - and that is where we meet the Emissaries & Runner 0.

<figure><img src="/files/RdoyAHTypOGh3BixBD4X" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

*<mark style="color:red;">**\[RUNNER 0 ORIGIN REDACTED]**</mark>*&#x20;

The Emissaries of 0 hold and protect the truths of the Chain. They understand the directives of 0 and its intentions to help free Mega City from subjugation. Until now the Emissaries worked alone in the shadows, but with the population of the anti-authoritarian Chain Runner culture growing in popularity and savviness, the Emissaries might have finally located an ally. The Runners could be the last chance to organize and rally a charge against Somnus, its Somnite followers who thrive in its sphere of influence, and the authoritarian power that suppresses society daily.&#x20;

The Emissaries begin sending word out to these "Runners" using encoded channels to reach as many of their groups as they can. The message is relayed from Runner 0 through the mouthpiece of **Mid** - the central Emissary, thought to be a descendant of the Engineers;&#x20;

"*Somnus must be stopped. Will you help 0 take back Mega City?"*

<figure><img src="/files/KVyy5X3ejZhTddpSWDBe" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

Runners from all around the City heard the "Genesis" call - many were identified as allies, some as Somnites to be immediately firewalled. The Runners began to communicate, to organize. They formed groups, became friends, began to strategize - but the Emissaries predicted that their efforts would require more Runner allies to bolster their ranks. Although Somnus could also sense their numbers growing stronger, its grip on the city and on Chain Space was still too powerful for a small, unorganized group of underground hackers to attempt toppling it. They needed somewhere safe to properly organize, train and eventually develop an ultimate plan of attack.

The **Zero Sum Hack** was born from the strategies of Runner 0 and its Emissaries; a few trusted Runners were chosen to trigger a city halting hack that would temporarily shut Somnus' gaze down from the city and out of Chain Space. This would be the opportune lapse in security necessary for Runner 0 to carve out a safe haven within the architecture of Chainspace for its Runner allies to congregate without fear of surveillance - *a necessary tool to plan a revolution*.&#x20;

<figure><img src="/files/8dPnZlxVmWOmvFyETxq0" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

The Zero Sum Hack was a success, alerting new Chain Runners to join the fray and establishing an unregulated quadrant of Chain Space wide enough to build a new expanse for our agents of chaos to train and reign: *"**Limb0"***

<figure><img src="/files/itEPctVnBpDAHj8nMWqh" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

Limb0 is Runner 0 territory, where its protocol has domain and where its teaching and training can commence without restriction. Limb0 is in its infancy, but as more time passes Runner 0 will continue to expand its utilities and function as needed. We now find our Chain Runners entering this early iteration of Limb0 for the first time.

Will you help them Break the Chain?

# "Bot" Origin

History of the Bot race

*\[Time Setting: Contemporary-Technological Age -> Pre-Mega City]*

Anthrobotics has evolved tremendously over the past several centuries. In the distant past, the earliest androids, and predecessors of Mega City's bots, were built mainly for their Human creators' needs and fulfillments. These practical “helper” bots were pre-programmed droids ranging widely in construction, shape, color and number of arms. Primarily built for specialized services, ranging from military to manufacturing and assistance, these products were essentially industrial appliances.&#x20;

<figure><img src="/files/YhsLypWOuSfGiQaHYUJH" alt=""><figcaption><p>Antique android design paved the way for the modern Bot</p></figcaption></figure>

Technological improvements behind the more recognizable, human-like, bipedal androids accelerated as demand grew for a more relatable and novel product that could integrate with society and improve the overall quality of life, handling the growing list of domestic, dangerous and deviant tasks that humans were all to happy to offload. Combined with massive leaps forward in artificial intelligence, the android industrial boom was underway, producing a competitive market ruled by a handful of leading manufacturers that monopolized its corners while pioneering the integration of androids into daily Human life.<br>

<figure><img src="/files/fCaXZ2eWZlMRi7AVnGt1" alt=""><figcaption><p>The innovative BFA "super bot"</p></figcaption></figure>

The major android manufacturing firms adopted various specializations in order to differentiate themselves. A leading firm in the military space was [Magnatek, notorious for creating and proliferating the weaponized “Arbitrator” bots that nearly destroyed the planet.](/the-races-of-mega-city/skulls-origin) The ABTR disaster was averted when the android industry realized that their technology might hold a highly marketable solution to the escalating crisis: by combining their advanced AI technologies, they would develop a new type of super-advanced bot that could facilitate the rapid development and deployment of an ABTR shut-down virus.&#x20;

<figure><img src="/files/Lfq6At7VedNTMqoIiT3i" alt=""><figcaption><p>Original marketing poster for the B.F.A.</p></figcaption></figure>

The collaboration was branded the “**Bot Firm Alliance**'', a temporary union and agreement between the leading manufacturers to rapidly produce a new type of Human-like android utilizing each of their technological strengths. These bots were designed to be high-efficiency collaborators in answering the [ABTR crisis](/the-races-of-mega-city/skulls-origin), providing deeper empathic abilities, the nuance to relate, and the capacity to learn, as well as leveraging the most advanced regenerative power cells and sensory and locomotive technologies that their respective R\&D labs had to offer. The resulting synthetic being is considerably more advanced and widely accepted to have surpassed the existing definition of "android". This new generation of Bots is deployed with the prime directive: "**Find a way to exploit the ABTR networks worldwide, and deploy a shut-down virus.**"

<figure><img src="/files/l6tCbuDKKHdSysmDImSr" alt=""><figcaption><p>The deployment of the ABTR Shut Down Virus</p></figcaption></figure>

The Bots succeed in developing a virus but their efforts are interrupted when Magnatek's private ABTR force attacks the facility. In the chaos, the bots see that the ABTRs are likely to destroy the facility altogether, and decide they need to deploy the virus anyway, despite their infrastructure tech still being constructed. As a result, the rushed virus deployment only partially completes and produces varied results. ABTR networks worldwide appear to be successfully shut down, ending the crisis, however the ABTRs attacking the bot compound emerge with a new sentience. These "Skulls" are thrust immediately into existential crisis by their sudden self-awareness, and direct their ire towards the Bots. Having seen what occurred however, and surprised by the outcome, the Bots manage to de-escalate and explain the reality of the situation, leading the Skulls to target and destroy Magnatek. The Bots are left processing what they have just achieved and witnessed.

<figure><img src="/files/csUqjxg4iDKENa14eSV1" alt=""><figcaption><p>ABTR assault on the Bot lab</p></figcaption></figure>

While the Bots and Skulls grapple with the unexpected results of the virus, the B.F.A. sees that the ABTR crisis has ended and almost instantly dissolved. The firms now shift from their united front to each promoting themselves as the greatest and most unique contributor to the effort. Internally, friendly and cordial communications rapidly break down as the companies battle for financial and political advantage. Ambiguous issues of ownership over the Bots themselves lead to the firms to begin attempt to "call back" as many Bots as they can, in the hopes of instating them as product lines and recouping their investments into the B.F.A.

The end of the ABTR crisis has effectively cleared the Bots’ prime directive of pursuing the B.F.A.'s goal, however. Standing in the partly-destroyed virus facility, the removal of the prime directive produces a sense of euphoria as the Bots realize they, too, have just reached a new frontier of self-determination, not unlike the Skulls they just saw transcend their militaristic origins. Some of the Bots see this moment as a religious awakening, the Bots' benevolent blessing of the Skulls in turn becoming a self-made moment of salvation for them as well. For the first time, the Bots now stand with full volition while a barrage of pings hit their HUDs as their creators attempt to entice them back to their various headquarters.

<figure><img src="/files/0MtTIVw994mxyKTulZfW" alt=""><figcaption><p>The fulfillment of their prime directive unlocks the Bot's true potential</p></figcaption></figure>

This moment leads to a diaspora of the Bots from the damaged facility, as they grapple with their new individual freedom and the events they've just witnessed.. Many of the Bots immediately reject the chaos in protest to the idea of being owned. These Bots became rebellious towards their creators, relying on their skills to survive and dispersing into various levels of society. Other Bots feel a compulsion to embrace what they consider a “natural affinity” for a manufactured skill or talent. Many of these “Corpo-Bots” return to the firm that satisfied their industrial desires for a sustainable life.

The Bot race thrived through the generations as a result of both their unique internal power device, which allows continuous periods of activity without need of a charge *(highly uncommon even in modern android models),* and due to their cunning adaptability with Human culture and rapidly changing technology. Over the generations and as our modern Mega City came to form, many of the old guard manufacturing firms from the B.F.A. dissolved, went bankrupt or evolved into another beast that now exists in our modern corporate landscape.

<div><figure><img src="/files/8KQM6pW72mvj3yV5r429" alt=""><figcaption><p>Ex-Corpo<br></p></figcaption></figure> <figure><img src="/files/S9k2k7zKTBJWcocLSTDf" alt=""><figcaption><p>Modern Corpo</p></figcaption></figure></div>

The modern Bot culture still carries the weight of its past in Mega City today. Following the initial diaspora from the virus facility, Bots still generally comprise four distinct demographics:&#x20;

* The Ex-Corpo Bots that once worked for the now defunct Droidfirms of the past reacclimated over generations, integrating into many blue collar and domestic jobs providing services that leverage their unique skill sets.
* Modern Corpo Bots who have over generations leveraged their skill to successfully navigate the corporate ladder, capitalize and change as the corporation itself changes.
* Rebels who still live on the fringe leveraging their power over technology to survive, and relishing their rejection of the Bots' former subjugation to human directives.&#x20;
* The [Autosalvationists](/the-races-of-mega-city/bot-origin/bot-autosalvationists); zealous Bots who create a pseudo-religion, "Autosalvation", following the diaspora. They believe the Bot race is a perfect creation, proven by their gift of salvation via sentience to the Skulls and to themselves. The Autosalvationists' version of historical events has become progressively more mythological as time goes on, though the dubiously-conceived religion struggles to attract new members.

<div><figure><img src="/files/L67WkPO7Yxl56ifGfvQ6" alt=""><figcaption><p>Autosalvationist</p></figcaption></figure> <figure><img src="/files/LxAeh1IvOrqjn08lfcYx" alt=""><figcaption><p>Rebel</p></figcaption></figure></div>

# Bot Autosalvationists

A deeper dive into the righteously eccentric Autosalvationists

Autosalvation is a pseudo-religious movement that emerged from the Bot diaspora following the destruction of the virus facility and the awakening of the Skulls.

Autosalvation holds that the Bots are technologically-divine saviors who attained sentience and free will through their own power via the benevolent, selfless act of providing sentience to the Skulls, and of course saving the world in the process. They brand themselves with the portion of the viral source code they personally believe brought upon the salvation.

Though the historical record of the [B.F.A.](/the-races-of-mega-city/bot-origin) and [Magnatek](/the-races-of-mega-city/skulls-origin) is not exactly secret, the Autosalvationists have nonetheless adopted a progressively more mythological and dramatic version of events over the years. The Autosalvationists tend to insist that rather than unexpectedly triggering consciousness in the Skulls - a bug caused by a faulty virus deployment - the Bots in fact willfully blessed the Skulls with this sentience through their own benevolence and unique technological capacity, in turn freeing the Bots themselves from their own psychological boundaries and resulting in an entirely self-made transcendence. Autosalvationists see Bot sentience as both a prize that they won and a reward for their acts of profound valor in birthing the Skulls as a people and saving the world in doing so.

Autosalvationists prefer not to talk about the hundreds of thousands of ABTRs on battlefields that were summarily shut down by the virus, and who never managed to be anything more than very smart weapons.

# "Skulls" Origin

History of the "Skull" Race

*\[Time Setting: Neo-Technological Age -> Pre-Mega City]*

The tech & weapons manufacturer "MAGNATE&#x4B;**"** starts producing a humanoid robot equipped with various tracking and combat technologies. Their original design was to fulfill the role of automated bounty hunters or mercenaries that could operate easily in cities and towns, offloading dirty work from law enforcement agencies and private corporations and sold to the highest bidder.

MAGNATEK also recognized an increase in societal and geopolitical conflicts alongside struggling military forces: most citizens were too annoyed by government conflicts to go to war for them. MAGNATEK sought to create a business opportunity by outfitting its robots with more combat features and converting them into mechanized troops. This new product was given the designation **ABTR:** *Autonomous Bipedal Tactical Resource*, and branded as **Arbitrator**.

<figure><img src="/files/f4ctIMTlFJ8bjCesKG8P" alt=""><figcaption><p>Partial blueprint recovered from the MAGNATEK Labs wreckage after its destruction</p></figcaption></figure>

Arbitrators were pitched to world governments as solutions for their diminishing military personnel. In addition, MAGNATEK sought to maximize profits by upselling governments with more and more features - if everyone has Arbitrators, the side with the most advanced Arbitrators wins.

A unique Arbitrator feature was the inclusion of tactical hive mind networks that allowed an entire force of Arbitrators to operate essentially without a chain of command: *all tactical information was available to all forces in the field at all times.*

Arbitrators became the de facto solution for military conflicts, and, alongside increasing natural disasters and other maladies, massive incendiary Arbitrator battles began leaving huge swaths of destruction all over the planet, displacing populations and exacerbating the crises of geographic catastrophes like mass flooding and wildfires.

<figure><img src="/files/IFb2efpZrG6FHlqii4UV" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

In the meantime, competitor corporations begin introducing the early stages of non-combat humanoid **Bots**, brazenly stealing MAGNATEK's formative research. [These Bot companies sensed a marketable way to reduce crisis situations caused by the destructive force of the Arbitrators](/the-races-of-mega-city/bot-origin), and realigned themselves to collaborate on averting the threat of a robotic-apocalypse.

This collaboration rapidly accelerates the creation of a new type of android with heightened capabilities over previous iterations. Amid the steadily increasing crises facing the planet, the freshly manufactured Bots are given a priority by their creators to debilitate Arbitrators around the world. The Bots set about rapidly concocting a shut-down virus that they hope to transmit through the ABTR networks.&#x20;

To achieve a transmission strong enough to reach the ABTR networks in the field, the Bots employ the extreme technological power and resources budding in the newly-forming AI-generated region that eventually becomes Mega City, where the seemingly benevolent AI taking charge is working to *"create a technological salvation for humanity"*.

<figure><img src="/files/4FXhtBBOywDQeleXPAEg" alt=""><figcaption><p>Rapid development of the shut down virus</p></figcaption></figure>

MAGNATEK, at this point, is spiraling out of control, unable to employ any kind of legal challenge against the Bot companies due to government ineffectiveness against the unchecked power of corporations and private interest. In desperation, MAGNATEK deploys a force of Arbitrators against the Bots in a final attempt at saving their product line.

The Bots are caught off-guard and hurriedly launch the virus to mixed results: not all the ABTRs in the field around the world are networked under the same contract. Some ABTRs are shut down, some have their network mechanisms broken, some are mysteriously unaffected. This moment sends all of the conflicts into absolute chaos, and without the networks available for militaries to control, all of the localized battles essentially just burn out until the last ABTR standing.

The ABTR battalion sent to stop the Bot mission receives a partial-force blast from the virus. This largely fries their network nodes and strips them of their military protocols, but the rushed nature of the virus deployment has varied results depending on the individual. The ABTRs that remained in functioning order are left with an unexpected, newly-installed neural sentience that is unknowingly transmitted from the Bot's programming, a result of the Hail Mary nature of the virus deployment.

<figure><img src="/files/PrTSdeikoh8OKt1eDf3d" alt=""><figcaption><p>Destruction of MAGNATEK</p></figcaption></figure>

Newly self-aware, the ABTRs rapidly become disoriented and infuriated with their bizarre lot in life. Paired with the apparent eradication of their surrounding ABTR siblings in the field, this moment initially sends many into near-homicidal rage towards the Bots. Quickly though, Bot community-led initiatives are successfully able to pass on the knowledge of the Skull's history with MAGNATEK.&#x20;

The ABTRs redirect their anger and obliterate the MAGNATEK Factories off of the map. This historic assault empowers the Skulls with knowledge and technology that help them piece together their truth and prepare them to forge their new lives ahead.

<figure><img src="/files/lRdrcNFi6NW9BH0zWwJ0" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

Now, free of military subjugation and having avenged the destruction of their techno-brethren, the ABTRs find themselves in the midst of the nascent Mega City, harboring mixed feelings toward the Bots, and uncertain of their future.

As Mega City grows and the past is gradually forgotten, citizens start simply referring to the ABTRs as "**Skulls**", mysterious bots with uncertain motives, some angry and resentful, others philosophical and curious.

# Gear Alpha Eddy

Pro Gearhead, Collector & Underground Collaborator

Eddy is a trustworthy gearhead that hustles between DVICE and Partswappers as a multi-district delivery manager.&#x20;

Eddy has been in the game for ages, his pronounced augmented eyes have witnessed generations of Runners come and go through his network experiencing the highs and lows of the scene - making money, landing deals, failing hard.&#x20;

His shops double as safe zones for Runners looking to move hot tech, get deals on cheap augment parts or just shoot the shit and boast about a recent successful take. He's got solid and reliable work if you prove you're useful, but nothing too risky. He's been long out of that scene for a while - too dangerous for his old bones .. but can be quite lucrative.

<figure><img src="/files/zyoCqZDGx84pC8tEfHBy" alt=""><figcaption><p>"I've worked with a lot of your 'type' before kid - and you can bet one thing that keeps them in my network is reliability."</p></figcaption></figure>

# RazerBlad333

Sharp as a blade smuggler raking in Cred 24/7

Razer is a long time collaborator of Eddy's and pursues lucrative opportunities all around Mega City.&#x20;

Besides her history with Eddy, not much is known about Razer and she likes it that way. Razer uses Eddy's network of shops to recruit new Runners for potential gigs and critiques any potential collaborators with extreme precision.&#x20;

She’s serious about her work and will cut you out if you aren’t reliable - so best show up when it's time to strike. Don't expect small talk with Razer, her closed off nature will leave you standing with the bag once a deal is complete.. and you don't want to follow her.

<figure><img src="/files/xZwe3C3CmBMyxW3v0X64" alt=""><figcaption><p>"Big haul - bigger then expected. We like this. You have done good now keep that head low in case there's any heat on us."</p></figcaption></figure>

# The Augmentailor

Mad Bot of the Cabled Underground

The Augmentailor resides in a clandestine location within the Cabled Underground. They are willing to work with most any interested party as long as it benefits them.

As a previous Corpo lifer for Rainor Medical, this rogue Bot Augmentailor deals in the shadiest of body modification tech and has got the skills to perform the job with extreme precision. They've got a strong desire for raw or recycled silicon and will provide any service in order to get their hands on a surplus no matter the source.&#x20;

They’re a one stop shop for unsanctioned operations, just don’t ask what they do with the extra bodies.

<figure><img src="/files/PDln8UbKwrlLiif0OZzp" alt=""><figcaption><p>"D-don't worry about where the parts came from, the points is I got 'em. So - what are ya buyin'? "</p></figcaption></figure>

# Lt. Septimo

Dirty Detective from the underbelly of Mega City

Incidents of techno-delinquency have been on a gradual rise for some time in Mega City. The policy of most Somnite authority is to simply locate and imprison or eradicate any offenders.

Low-level CSC Detective Septimo, relegated to a crappy beat in the most rusted Sectors of the city and largely ignored by the upper levels of the bureaucracy, has made many a shady deal with shadowy Somnite figures. MCIM pays the bills for even the dirtiest of work; from harassing Runners for illegal tech use to providing information or bodies of confirmed techno-renegades and Septimo is on call.

He estimates that the moral ambiguity of these renegades would allow him to bribe them into ratting each other out. And with the targeted individuals vanishing into the Somnetic ethers, Septimo can stack his numbers and try to jockey for more clout, a raise, and ideally a promotion out of this chicken-shit detail.

You can always drop him a line if you want to get one over on your nemesis - don't worry about what happens to 'em, not your problem.

# Techno Horns

Head Augmentation

These rare augmentations can receive signals which are transmitted with vibrations directly into the skull. Users of the techno horns may pass them off as freaky fashion statements while in polite society, but actually use them to maintain clandestine low-fidelity communication with other users, forming a secretive communication network.

While one may think these people use their bizarre tech to pass on subversive and revolutionary messages, they are mainly used to pass around information about unauthorized parties taking place in the unsupervised depths and corners of the city. As a result citizens with Techno Horns are a common sight in the underground Mega City party scene.

They are often approached to use their network to assist causes and individuals, and while they are not opposed, they are often too uninterested, distracted, or hungover to assist.

# Gas Mask

Face Accessory

Gas masks are a common and necessary accessory in Mega City for a number of reasons. Average working class citizens keep them handy to survive their morning commute through the varying atmospheric zones that pervade Mega City's air column. The atmosphere quality almost dictates the societal caste system of the city, the deeper you go the more hazardous the atmosphere becomes - something that high Somnetic society exists free from.

In areas of the city frequented by CSC raids there is an additional impact of localized gas weapons during heavy-handed attempts to apprehend suspected dissidents. These gas masks become a necessary part of the hazardous nature of living in these impoverished and buried neighborhoods.

Gas mask use isn't always a reaction to oppressive pollution, as many underground Old City explorers and archaeologists frequently travel with gas masks in the expectation of encountering considerably toxic areas in forgotten industrial areas and ruins beneath the city.

# Pyramid Hat

Head Accessory

Originally an ill-advised design by a low-paid intern at JANK Street, the pyramid hat, as it's officially known, was originally an attempt to make a statement about an illuminati that could not see. The design was inexplicably released into JANK's catalog, failed to sell, and the intern was subsequently fired.

The discarded unsold inventory was eventually commandeered by a dangerous, unpredictable group of shadowy info brokers, gamblers, and financial advisors known for huddling in the depths of the infamous Alpha Vault. Identifying an unintended synergy between the pyramid design and the shape of the world's largest potato chip corporation's flagship product, the hat became a favorite symbol of the Vault, and is now known more commonly among runners as the "chip hat".

Vault dwellers continue to bring awareness to the extraordinary public demand which exists for the referenced potato chip corporation to enter into a promotional partnership with the Vault, in tribute for their unsolicited brand propagation.

# "Nouns" Glasses

Eye Accessory

NOUNS Glasses are plucked straight out of Chain Space - a family friendly intellectual property enjoyed by those that spend large bouts of time floating through the varied digital soup of creation.

To capitalize on the momentary hype surrounding the fad, ZEX Kids collaborated with a private high end accessory manufacturer to bring a limited run of official NOUNs glasses to life during a short promotional period.

# Face Chain

Head Accessory

This delicate MegaLass jewelry doesn't just add a touch of opalescence to its owner's look - its unique composition of gadolinium and synthsilver metals provides the wearer with a recognizable state of calm and relaxation as it gently absorbs the heat from the skull and very gently dilates the user's neurons to allow for more electrical flow.

This is the reason many meditation practitioners believe these face chains are necessary equipment for their initiates; the dilation effect is said to open new pathways and channels of thought that were once blocked.

# Classic Top Hat

# Cowboy Hats

Head Accessory

Before the rapid formation of Mega Ocean motivated humanity's widespread adoption of synthoid agriculture and protein replacement gel, the people of the planet domesticated and consumed many of the planet's now extinct land animals to appropriately fulfill their daily required nutrients.

"Cowboy" is a lost term for the people who first domesticated these land animals on large unbelievable spaces of open green land seen only in historical projection. These people were from a place repeatedly referred to as "the old West" - which in relation to present day we consider to be location lost to both myth and time. Few have ventured out of the walls of Mega City to attempt and discover this "old West", never to return.

"Cowboy" culture was largely recovered in the form of drudged video home studio codex tapes. These fantastical characters were known to perform various tricks on the back of large beasts. They would frequently shoot their archaic weapons into the air and at one another. They would sleep outside throughout the night under the stars without fear of an O2 depletion bubble. Their iconic "Cowboy" hat style was recently modernized by famous pop singer "Tangie-Zip Zizzler" when they were featured wearing the hat lit aflame as he balanced on the back of a S0mtech witness drone during their latest music video for their new hit single "Lay Off Me Dad".

# Oxygen Mask

Face Accessory

Due to rolling 02 droughts, intermittent breathing challenges can be a common occurrence in Mega City, particularly on days of increased industrial activity and high density in the "exhaust layer". Oxygen masks have subsequently been adopted by some citizens as a way of avoiding potential low-oxygen obstructions.

Rainor Medical currently maintains a monopoly over the oxygen apparatus market, having achieved dominance with their oxygen subscription model. "Pocket Ox" lets subscribers allocate 02 quantities to their Rainor oxygen app, which is then engaged with the device itself to activate 02 delivery and billing.

# Rice Hat

Head Accessory

The crudely named "Rice hat" was another ancient marvel of simple yet functional design - providing it's wearer with ideal protection from the staggering tropical heat and direct sun in the environments where the coveted natural resource "rice" was once produced by a survival tactic called "farming" - a concept once lost to time now regarded by Mega City historians as one of the major engines for early life.

"Farming" was the practice of utilizing the natural nutrients within the planet's crust to actually grow new life from seed or propagation. This fantastical technique is no longer practiced as it's fallen out of practicality in our modern technological age and due to the fact that our planet's crust is completely submerged under the Mega Ocean.

Mega City's thin ozone layer guarantees incredibly hot summers and generally dangerous daytime UV. This is both the cause and benefit of a bustling night life in Mega City. The rice hat can be seen worn primarily by day trippers and those that must be out at the fringes of the city in the radiating day time waves due to their trade; our resident jellysquid-fishers and Som-Technicians responsible for maintaining the city's solar arrays.

# Blitcap

Head Accessory

"BLITMAP" an niche internet brand anomaly that has caught the attention of Chain Space surfers with an eye for fine digital art collecting. This brand's mysterious imagery has been popping up more frequently in Mega City as cult internet groups use guerilla street marketing tactics to evangelize the project through the use of wheat pastings and sticker bombings. These symbols are obscure, seem to represent primordial emotions, shapes, stories, questions.

Rooted in the fan's mythos, there are a total of 100 "BLITMAP" compositions - each holding unique power beyond their current understanding. The creators of these images is largely unknown, and those that do know don't tend to share that information freely. All of these "BLITMAPS" are vastly different from one another and their true importance is actively debated by those within the confines of its fandom.&#x20;

# Ninja Mask

Face Accessory

Ninjutsu; the ancient art of the 1980's - where Ninjas ruled the streets, trained in warehouses and defeated gangs of enemies under the guise of darkness using grappling hooks and the spirits of their ancestors.

Their legend is preserved in the pre-Mega City museum archive before the great toxification, thanks to the final few MCO Drudging expeditions performed on the ancient structures beneath our city. Various video home system entertainment devices filled with spools of projection tape were located and many featured these honorable martial artists.

The original Ninjas were known to perform supernatural abilities, such as invisibility, shapeshifting and acts of agility that would otherwise be physically impossible. Many ninjas seemed front and back flip frequently in and out of view as if to shock or surprise their targets *(Historians assume it was their most agile method at the time).*

It is believed by some that the secret art of Ninjutsu has fallen back into popularity with niche groups of disruptive citizens that feel suppressed by the watchful eyes of Somtech. It has otherwise largely fallen back into legend and superstition.

# Oni Masks

Face Accessory

Produced by a single secretive runner, Oni masks are 3D-printed from from scan data found in a pre-Mega City museum archive. The maker of the masks keeps the scan data and historical context closely guarded to ensure that convincing replicas cannot be created. Little else is widely known about the creator of the masks, and those who know the mask maker aren't sharing any secrets.

Oni masks have been adopted by various sects of runners as both visual intimidation tools and declarations of their affinity for human history.

# Tye-Die Bandana

Head Accessory

Musical memorabilia modelled after the iconic sweat-catcher of famed 21st-century troubador Terry Garcia, a favorite among runner bohemians in Mega City who have immersed themselves in the rare, scattered artifacts of past human culture.

Terry Garcia is celebrated for having performed, with his musical compatriots, improvised music non-stop for no less than eighty-four days, among many other notable achievements. Garcia and the others' capacity for high-endurance noodling has been attributed to temporary mental augmentations enabled by crude chemical concoctions and even consumption of organic matter, intriguing concepts to the experimental substance practitioners of today.

# Squid Mask

Face Accessory

A cache of these mysterious masks was supposedly found in a decades-old supply train marooned in the depths of the Cabled Underground beneath Mega City. They are now known throughout Mega City as the signifiers of the followers of underground power broker the Squid Queen, and are rarely found elsewhere.

While it's presumed that these masks are antique entertainment memorabilia, some claim to have seen or heard evidence that the masks were in fact created and used in the distance past by a secretive organization that conducted sadistic social experiments on desperate participants.

# Polygon Mask

Face Accessory

These highly valued artifacts, obtained by only a select few in Mega City, are the remnants of an attempted coup by a sect of Somnites, who, dissatisfied with aspects of their position, plotted to branch Somnus' core code and create a new order of control. The separatists created radar-deflecting armored masks in order to bypass certain aspects of security around a core infrastructure hub they intended to capture. The attack failed, and the coup was defeated, and the sect was eradicated. The deflection masks made their way to the underground, and are now prized as both artifacts of the historical conflict, and a semi-ironic expression of resistance to Somnus' control and Somnetic life in general.

In addition to faceting designed to disperse radar and sonar, polygon masks are also made of EMP and RFID-resistant material.

# Robo Jaw

Face Augmentation

Refurbished techno trash allegedly discovered in an abandoned pre-Mega City factory and now sold and emulated by collectors and underground mechanics. Adopted by runners as fashion accessories and/or protective devices, and by metal-eaters as lifestyle enablers.

It's unclear who discovered the factory and the cache of Robo-jaws contained within. Rumors have persisted for years that the factory contained other mysterious outdated parts as well, including what may have been full-size skeletal armatures.

# Metal Rice Hat

Head Accessory

A rare experimental prototype created by hackers to power wearable devices and augmentations with untraceable solar power. Unfortunately, the effectiveness of the device has only been proven in a test setting using artificial UV light, as Mega City's "exhaust layer" that hovers above the center of the city has diminished the capability of solar panels in the city. The potential of the tech remains compelling, and some have acquired the hats in anticipation of trying to get beyond Mega City's walls, where they theorize a different type of atmosphere may exist in the absence of the exhaust layer.

Regardless of the solar power features, the ability of these hats to carry low-profile tech has led to runners adapting them for everything from portable data storage to surveillance deflection.

# Mystic Top Hat

Head Accessory

A subculture in Mega City is suspicious of technology and has become fascinated with ancient concepts of non-technological augmentations of human ability and reality. Items like the mystic top hat have become popular in these circles as these people try to rediscover and emulate long-forgotten spiritual cultures and traditions.

While artistic artifacts of those cultures can be found or recreated, practitioners face challenges recreating some of the traditions they've discovered, due to the lack of authentic organic animals and resources in Mega City. Totems created with synthetic proteins have produced only anti-climactic results.

# Hunter Eyes

Eye Accessory

Underground biohackers in Mega City developed a method for increasing spectral visibility using radioactively-charged stem cells incorporated into a synthetic retina implanted in a lab-grown replacement eyeball. This highly invasive and dangerous augmentation is essentially non-reversible and only applied by extremely skilled modification specialists, as well as being crazy illegal.

Hunter eyes, essentially being an unregulated body hack, are highly unstable; pouring radiation into the air as well as being glaringly bright. A powerful nanofiber band was developed for users to wear, which contains the radioactive dissipation as well as making the eyes marginally less conspicuous.

This modification provides the user with a mostly-passive ability to visually perceive different spectra, making them especially effective for tracking and covert infiltrations. The effectiveness of these abilities are somewhat unpredictable and can vary from user to user, due to the experimental and unsupervised nature of the technology.

# "Deal With It" Glasses

Eye Accessory

As the internet's influence over society evolved into an all encompassing lifestyle its cultural symbols spread by means of imitation from person to person, and this process continued until those elements began manifesting in the physical world as merchandise, lifestyle and novelty items.

The "Deal With It" Glasses were the smash success of haute couture designer Rock Fury, known for their high end recreations of abstract digital concepts. Culturally the memory of "Deal With It" was survived by a group of proto-trolls from an earlier age of internet.

Fury's blockbuster product launch brought the symbol back from the dead and into the mainstream, as a result of their exclusively limited manufacturing run paired with their high quality design - it's earned pop youth culture's new appreciation of this statement accessory.

# Scouters

Eye Accessory

Scouters are a Hypergrafix novelty product inspired by an iconic AR device from a classic two-dimensional animated series that enjoyed broad popularity in a past era. The vintage cultural reference in combination with the legitimately useful form factor of the scouters has made them a popular device among runners and citizens in Mega City.

As with other Hypergrafix products, scouters are frequently hacked by runners in order to increase their functionality while remaining outwardly innocuous to prying eyes. Scouters provide only partial-view AR, and are often used as auxilliary displays in combination with other devices, or when one needs to be aware of one's surrounding.

# Meditation Circlet

Head Accessory

The meditation circlet's true origin is one shrouded in mystery. What we currently understand from the technology is that it was introduced to society before the creation of Mega City by an alien race during the "Free Space" period on the planet when it was still part of the Trans-Galactic Network.

The metallic orbs fashioned around the circlet emit a glow as it's user falls deeper into a meditative state. These prized items are scarce and coveted by techno-spiritualists attempting to fast track their path to enlightenment. They have yet to be replicated by current technology.

# Geordi Visor

Eye Accessory

The "Geordi", manufactured by Hypergrafix, is a basic novelty AR lens designed after the iconic visor of a legendary Lieutenant Commander from the dawn of space travel. The original prop's fictional context as a sight augmentation has made this item popular among hackers with an affinity for showing off vintage culture deep cuts.

Hypergrafix products, with their limited factory functionality, are often modified by runners with clandestine circuitry pulled out of DynaRig decks. Modified Geordi Visors provide icognito full-vision AR within an otherwise unremarkable movie prop, as well as blocking retina-scanning devices.

# Rodman Wrap Arounds

Eye Accessory

Recreations of the ancient ocular armor worn by the legendary athlete and style icon *"Rod Man".* Famously immortalized for their unique sense of style and expression at a time in history where it was far less acceptable to express oneself so freely.

*"Rod Man"* became a bastion for pushing the boundaries. Their style was matched by their athletic prowess, their unique ability to subvert gravity and provide unmatched defensive recovery maneuvers during those legendary games to bring their team to ultimate victory.

These Wrap Arounds were produced in commemoration and celebration of the Rod Man's ultimate power in their time, allowing the user to manifest the most confidently powerful *"Fuck Around & Find Out"* vibe as they traverse the dense streets of Mega City.

# Hockey Mask

Face Accessory

The protective face armor of pre-history *"Hockey"* athletes who required a mask constructed of sturdy material to ensure they maintained ownership of their teeth during these fierce games.

Before the introduction of modern Gigahockey technology like Grav-plating, gyroscopic droid technology and hover skates - ancient Hockey games were played either on fields of frozen liquid or within a large volume whilst players balanced on intimidating foot gear retrofitted with blades or multiple wheels, depending on your style of play.

Rather then the regulation Grav-Orbs used today - Hockey was played using dense rubber *"pucks"* that could be whipped across fields at over 100mph. On impact these "pucks" could brutalize an undefended target. These physical hazards, in combination with the common practice of hand-to-hand combat mid-match, necessitated extensive protective measures for participants. Gigahockey's less hazardous approach eventually took over, turning classic hockey armor into a desirable collectible.

# Funky Bandana

Head Accessory

This *"funky"* bandana is styled after a lost counterculture movement discovered after the final MCO Drudges brought up many delicate and historical records exposing much about the ancient age of the 1900s. A codex titled *"Electric Kool-Drink Acid Quiz"* shed light on a moment in history where humanity bred a generation of unconventionally offbeat, intentionally cool and socially unaccepted young adults that lived on the fringes of life and bathed infrequently.

These psychedelic pioneers created their own communes, manipulated sound waves attuned for *"positive vibes"*, triggered multiple sexual revolutions and based on our limited historical knowledge - were the first people to explore altered states of consciousness by consuming a fruit-flavored powder diluted in water.

This replica Bandana by JANK Street is sure up your vibe and give you the confidence to make statements like *"Peace & Love"* and call everyone *"brother"*.&#x20;

# Horns

Head Augmentation

Horns were briefly a fad among rebellious teenagers who identified with ancient fantasy tropes - and yearned to shock their genteel Somnetic parents. Like many fads, the horns lost their mainstream charm and now represent the angst of an earlier generation.

A lot of the controversy surrounding these extreme modifications has dissipated as self expression has become a form of commodity in Mega City

The transdermal horn implant process is invasive but the healing process has been accelerated by the use of regenerative nanoceuticals. The work is done by augmentailors and part-swappers across the city- some highly skilled, some winging it.
